The Choir of St John's

The Choir of St John's is led by a Director of Music and assisted by a number of volunteers.

Stephen Doughty

Director of Music
Stephen Doughty MMus ARCO LLCM

Stephen has been Director of Music since June 2001. He conducts the Garleton Singers in East Lothian, and was previously organist and choirmaster in Fairmilehead, St Mary's Haddington, and St Mary's Roman Catholic Cathedral in Edinburgh.

He is an examiner with the Associated Board, works as an accompanist for concerts and competitions, and plays organ and harpsichord for the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. Stephen read music at the then Napier College and the University of Edinburgh.

Assistant Organists
St John's benefits from three assistant organists; Noel de Jongh, Peter Horsfall and Caroline Cradock; each of whom (when not singing!) volunteer their expertise accompanying, rehearsing and conducting the Choir when required.

Choir Chaplain
The Revd Peter Brand is a non-stipendiary priest at St John's and chaplain to the Choir. The chaplain maintains links bewteen the Choir and the church on liturgical issues and also leads a number of choral services each year.

A number of others in the Choir make sure things run smoothly from organising the music library, to arranging parties and the occasional birthday card!
